The first feedback:
"Our 3rd Jazz picnic - bigger and better each year - well done to all
those who make it happen. Its a little ray of cultural
niceness
in wood green......"
How nice of you to tell us, Tim, thank you!
It was good to discover brilliant young local musicians:
Maya,
who
has played for us every year, took a turn as one part of the duo Adam Eats Grapes, who, with vocalist
Billy gave us some powerful ballads – not once put off by the
strident chimes
of a nearby ice cream van!. Later in the evening we heard Blues Chapter, often to be heard on a
Friday night at ‘The Waiting
Room’ in Palmers Green, who performed a medley of blues and
rock to close the
evening. Brilliant
stuff!
In
between,
we spent the afternoon enjoying our usual heady mix of listening to
jazz, the
wonderful Sultans of Swing, and
trying our luck at a folk dance or two: always a treat to watch! Crisply compered by Chris,
the afternoon
moved deftly from style to style and there hopefully was something for
everyone . The
weather held up, and when the sun shone
it was a beautiful afternoon.
Another
new
feature this year was the excellent Caribbean Cake Stall, raising money
for
Mustard Seed, a charity for disabled children in Jamaica.
Phil
kept
children and adults alike enthralled with a tale in two parts, and the
dancing
was as spectacular as ever! We
didn’t
get a tree to plant this year, but Haringey have promised three to make
up for
it!
Very
many
thanks to Mr Wali for the continued use of his electricity, keeping the
music
going!
